Historic Context of this Model

AMG began in 1967 as an independent engineering firm that specialized in performance improvements for Mercedes-Benz automobiles. Their success attracted the attention of Daimler-Benz who took a controlling interest in AMG in 1999 and became the sole owner in 2005. AMG typically starts with a sporting Mercedes-Benz model and gives it a more aggressive look, a higher level of performance, better handling, better stability and less weight. An AMG model is typically the most expensive and highest-performance version of each Mercedes-Benz class. All AMG engines are hand built using a “one man, one engine” philosophy, and each engine builder stamps the engines they produce with an engraved plaque depicting their signature. Typically these engines produce at least ten percent more power than standard. In addition, all AMGs include carbon fiber body panels to reduce overall vehicle weight.

In 2006 AMG introduced the AMG Black Series, an even more highly developed version of the Mercedes-Benz AMG performance models. The Black Series consists of two-seat fixed-head coupe designs only and are hand built in very limited numbers. Since their introduction, Black Series models have become known as street legal race cars. The handsome SL65 AMG Black Series received its world premier in Monterey in 2008. The six liter V12 engine received a power boost to 670 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque via bigger twin turbochargers, a larger intercooler, a redesigned exhaust and a remapped ECU. Power was delivered through AMG’s Speedshift Plus multi-mode five-speed automatic gearbox. The engineers also reduced overall vehicle weight by 550 pounds via more extensive use of carbon fiber panels. The chassis too was considerably modified in the interests of better road holding and controllability. When introduced, the new car price for one of these automobiles was about $302,000. The overall result is an automobile that is equally at home on the open road and on the race track. The 0 to 60 mph time is 3.7 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to a sensible 199 mph! With a total of only 350 units being produced through 2010, including 175 for the US market, the SL65 AMG Black Series is not only a beautiful sight to behold, but also an incredibly fast and exclusive automobile.

Market Trend

Two important ingredients for an automobile to have a favorable market trend are exclusivity and speed. The SL65 AMG Black Series possesses both of these ingredients in abundance. An identical example to the one offered here was sold by Bonhams in March of 2016 at the Goodwood Members Meeting in the UK. The example on offer had a total of 3,900 miles and sold for $294,000. Among other offerings from Mercedes-Benz in recent years, the SLR McLaren and the SLS AMG Coupe and Roadster stand out. It may be argued that the SL65 AMG Black Series is now the third member of that exclusive group, a group known to possess those two highly desirable ingredients, exclusivity and speed. In the past few years, an increasing interest can be seen in the limited production vehicles produced and offered during the financial crisis of 2008 to 2010. When offered new, these vehicles were, not surprisingly, challenged by the economic circumstances of their time. With today’s more stabilized world economies, recognition of these very limited production automobiles is making waves among perceptive automobile collectors. While economic cycles swing from time to time, there is a prevailing philosophy that rings true with this amazing car, “Exclusivity equals Value”.

This Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is a sensational hand-built coupe that is sure to meet the highest driving expectations of its owner. It is a street legal, thinly disguised racing car. With its diamond white metallic finish, this is also a breathtakingly beautiful automobile from any angle, one of just 350 ever produced and 175 for the US market. The fortunate next owner may be confident in the knowledge that this automobile will deliver exclusivity as well as brilliant performance whether for a concours lawn or road rally or for a highly satisfying day at a challenging road racing course.John Kleen, Vintage Consultant
